Tim Ferriss of the 4-hour Work Week published a great article this morning surrounding the subject of Work-Life balance and Psychological Interference. I’ve enjoyed following Tim’s adventures after reading his book last year, and this latest article really stands out.
In his article, Tim references a study by Dr. Steward Friedman around this subject. Dr. Friedman claims that attempting to achieve Work-Life balance is impossible, and leads to increased Psychological Interference. Increased Psychological Interference leads to feeling less of a Work-Life balance, and a downward spiral ensues.
The alternative offered is Total Leadership, described as a Jazz Quartet all working together to create vibrant and beautiful music. After working at home for almost a year now, a lot of what Dr. Friedman describes resonated with my experience.
Dr. Friedman has written a book about this subject, a book that I’m going to buy.
