Working out the kinks
I've been blogging for a few weeks now and I would have to say that
I love it. I love being able to write about topics important to me. It
is a real pleasure. I hope that the people who read this blog
find it interesting as well.
With a dozen posts under my
belt, I've started thinking more about what I want this blog to be
about. Before I even bought the domain name I threw together a
quick mind-map of what I wanted this blog to be about. Here's my
list of the different ideas of the purpose of this blog.
- To create and maintain a professional image of myself on the
web. I want this site to come up first when somebody Google's my
name. - To serve as a place for personal content aggregation. I
want my own space to comment on things I find on the net. Also, I
want to be able to simply bookmark something and easily retrieve it
from any computer. - To serve as a point of communication between me and my family, friends and professional organizations I'm involved with.
- Lastly, to provide a permenant home for my programming projects online.
I chose Drupal
as the CMS that runs the site because of it's flexibility. If I
would have gone with a more straightforward blogging software such as
Wordpress, I would have been more limited. Drupal has a bit
steeper learning curve, but I believe the benefits outweigh the
costs. Several high-profile sites have started using Drupal and
are singing it's praises.
In the end though, after I spill all
the beans on things I think are technically cool, it all comes down to
content. I have a lot of things I like to write about, personal
things, technology things, everything. So, here's what I'm
planning on doing in the coming weeks. I am going to reformat the
content of my blog into sort of magazine sections. Therefore, if
you are only interested in my thoughts about business and technology,
simply subscribe to that section. If you like to hear about my
dog Spike, you can subscribe to that feed too.
Why don't
I just use categories? Well, that's a complicated issue that can
be addressed later. Suffice it to say that content organization
is the cornerstone of any website and I choose to forego simply using
categories. Now, I will have a set of categories for each
section, but not a site-wide category system.
Look for the
changes sometime in the future, posts will be the first priority.
Thanks for reading my blog, I appreciate it.
